35 Y se le acercaron Santiago y Juan, los dos hijos de Zebedeo, diciéndole: “Maestro, queremos que hagas por nosotros lo que te pidamos”. 36 Y Él les dijo: “¿Qué es lo que desean?” 37 Ellos le dijeron: “Concédenos que en tu gloria nos sentemos uno a tu derecha y el otro a tu izquierda”.

42 Y llamándolos junto a sí, Jesús les dijo: “Ya saben que los jefes de las naciones las gobiernan como si fueran sus dueños y los poderosos los oprimen. Pero no debe ser así entre ustedes. Al contrario: el que quiera ser grande entre ustedes, que sea su servidor,

44 Y el que quiera ser el primero, que sea siervo de todos. 45 Así como el Hijo del Hombre, que no ha venido a que lo sirvan, sino a servir, y dar su vida por la redención de todos”. Palabra del Señor

Mark 10:32 - 45 32 The disciples were on the way, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus went ahead of them. They were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. Taking the Twelve aside again, he began to tell them what was going to happen to him.

33 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him, spit upon him, scourge him, and put him to death, but after three days he will rise.”

35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 He replied, “What do you wish me to do for you?” 37 They answered him, “Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left.”

They were amazed, because they knew it would be dangerous for Jesus to be there. They knew that if Jesus would just stay out of Jerusalem, he would be safe. Jesus could have taken the easy way out, but he acted decisively, even though his followers were afraid.

Jesus made it very clear, that to follow him would mean that you must endure a certain amount of suffering.

Chrysostom (On the Incomprehensible Nature of God 8.31) points out that they did not understand what they were asking for, when they were talking to Jesus about crowns and rewards and the privilege of the first seat and honors even before the contest had begun. The timing was wrong. This was the time for struggles, contests, toils, and sweat.

Jesus answered: “Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” (Mark 10: 38). They said: “We are able.” Jesus told them they did not know what they were asking. Eventually, they would find out. The Holy Spirit in due time would teach them all they needed to know in the future. They obviously could not bear it now.

Now that Jesus has gone through his passion and death, and has risen from the dead, we have the Holy Spirit to teach us how this applies to us. Baptism is a plunging, an immersion. It speaks of the plunging and immersion into God in the name of Jesus. There is no other way to salvation. Jesus said: “Unless a man be born again of water and the Spirit, he will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven.” (John 3:5).

Ahora que Jesús ha pasado por su pasión y muerte, y ha resucitado de entre los muertos, tenemos el Espirito Santo para enseñarnos como aplica esto para nosotros. El Bautismo es una inmersión. St. Paul said: “Don’t you know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?” (Romans 6:1-11). This means we have to break with the world that is full of lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life (1 John 2:16). And this has to happen often. It is also called conversion. We need it on a daily basis. That is when the Holy Spirit accompanies us as we walk the walk with the risen Christ, and talk his talk.

Let us pray for a renewal of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our hearts once again. It symbolizes a decision. We must decide to separate ourselves from those who resist God’s plan for holiness. St. Peter on Pentecost Sunday said: “Repent, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit… Save yourselves from this crooked generation!” (Acts 2:38-40).

Vamos a rezar para una renovación del derrame del Espirito Santo en nuestros corazones una vez más. Simboliza una decisión. To the early Christians it meant that they entered into the company of Jesus and those who witnessed his exaltation and who had experienced the power of his resurrection (Philippians 3:10). It was a stunning experience. It was deeply moving and had a profound impact on their lives. They went all over the world sharing what they knew about Baptism, this mysterious act which lay the foundation for their new way of life.

Para los primeros Cristianos quería decir que ellos entraron a la compañía de Jesús y de aquellos que fueron testigos de su exaltación y que habían experimentado al poder de su Resurrección (Filipenses 3:10).
