Telling Time Unidad 2 Etapa 2
Telling time in Spanish : Its 2:00.--Son las dos. Its 3:00.--Son las tres. Its 4:00.--Son las cuatro. Its 5:00--Son las cinco.
Put the answer in your head (or on paper) before clicking for it: Its 6:00. Son las seis. Its 8:00. Son las ocho. Its 11:00. Son las once.
In English, we say, Its 10 after 2:00, Its 20 after 4:00, etc. In Spanish, we say: Its 2:00 and 10. (2:10) --Son las dos y diez. Its 4:00 and 20. (4:20) -- Son las cuatro y veinte. Its 6:00 and a quarter (15). (6:15) Son las seis y cuarto. Its 8:00 and a half. (8:30) --Son las ocho y media. Note: The pink in English is equivalent to whats pink in Spanish, whats yellow in English is equivalent to whats yellow in Spanish, etc.
We say after only until we get to 30. We wouldnt say, Its 40 after 3:00. Instead, we say, Its 20 till 4:00. You cant say anything higher than 30. So once you reach 30, you count backwards. You say, Its 4:00 minus 20. (The equivalent of 20 till 4:00.) Its 4:00 minus 20. (3:40) Son las cuatro menos veinte. Its 7:00 minus 5. (6:55) Son las siete menos cinco. Its 10:00 minus 25.(9:35) Son las diez menos veinte y cinco. Its 12:00 minus a quarter. (11:45)Son las doce menos cuarto.
You may have noticed that none of the times mentioned so far have been in the 1:00 hour. Thats because you have to say, Its 1:00, differently from how you say, Its 2:00, 3:00, ETC. Its 1:00.-- Es la una. Its 1:10.-- Es la una y diez. Its 1:30.-- Es la una y media. Its 12:50. (1:00 minus 10) -- Es la una menos diez. Because una is one hour, es is used instead of son. Remember: es is singular and son is plural.
Note: media is the word for half (as in half past). Son las tres y media. Its half past 3:00. (3:30) cuarto means quarter. Son las tres y cuarto. Its a quarter past 3:00. (3:15) Dont confuse it with cuatro. Cuatro is the spanish word for the number four. Remember that both cuarto and quarter have uart in them.
