2 ¿Qué hora es? 1:00 Es la una. 1:05 Es la una y cinco.

We use the word “y” (which means and) to express the number of minutes after the hour. 1:05 Es la una y cinco.

4 Son las nueve y veinticinco.
¿Qué hora es? 2:10 Son las dos y diez. 9:25 Son las nueve y veinticinco.

5 Cuarto- another word for 15 minutes
Vocabulario nuevo... Cuarto- another word for 15 minutes ( it really means “quarter” and we use it for 15 minutes because that is a quarter of an hour.) 3:15 Son las tres y cuarto.

6 ¿Qué hora es? 8:00 Son las ocho. 8:15 Son las ocho y cuarto.

7 Medio- another word for 30 minutes
Vocabulario nuevo... Medio- another word for 30 minutes ( it really means “half” and we use it for 30 minutes because that is half of an hour.) 6:30 Son las seis y media.

8 ¿Qué hora es? 1:00 Es la una. 1:30 Es la una y media.

9 After 30 minutes, we are getting closer and closer to the next hour.

10 8:55 Son las nueve menos cinco. ¿Qué hora es?
Notice that it is almost 9:00. Because it is almost 9:00, we begin by saying: Son las nueve...

11 8:55 Son las nueve menos cinco. ¿Qué hora es? Son las nueve…
(Because it is almost 9:00!) Son las nueve… Next, we say “menos” (which means “minus”) and the number of minutes it will be until 9:00.
