The most frequently used negative words in Spanish are: Nada- nothing Nadie- no one, nobody Nunca, Jamás- never Ni…ni- neither…nor Ninguno(a, os, as) (ningún)- not one, not any
2. Review and contrast the following negative and affirmative words. 3. In Spanish the placement of a negative word can vary and unlike English, more than one negative word can be used in the same sentence. Ex: Ella nunca va allá. Ella no va allá nunca. Nadie está. No está nadie.
4. Note that the personal A must be used with alguien or nadie when either of these words is the direct object of the sentence and refers to a specific person (or persons). Ex: Ella vio a alguien. Ella no vio a nadie. 5. Tampoco is the negative Word that replaces también. Ex: Ella lo sabe también. Ella no lo sabe tampoco. (Ni yo tampoco.)
Sino y Pero 1. Sino means “but” in the sense of “rather” or “on the contrary.” It is used after the negative statement to contradict the negative statement. Ex: Ella no es rica, sino pobre. 2. Pero is used as “but” in all other cases. Ex: Trabaja mucho pero no gana mucho dinero.
