Group Activity: WHAT SHOULD PARENTS DO TO SUPPORT THEIR CHILDS TRANSITION INTO HIGH SCHOOL? ¿QUÉ DEBEN HACER LOS PADRES PARA APOYAR LA TRANSICIÓN DE SU HIJO/A EN LA ESCUELA PREPORATORIA?

What Should Parents Do? 1.Listen and be sensitive to your childs concerns. 2.Be supportive and assure them that they will be comfortable and successful in the new school setting. 3.Be firm, consistent, and fair when it comes to rules at home and at school. 4.Make academic achievement and going to college a priority. 5.Together learn about the A-Gs college preparatory courses, credits and testing needed to graduate 6.Make sure your child has developed effective study and time management skills. 7.Encourage your student to be responsible for their learning. 8.Make sure your student has a quiet place to study and do their homework.

¿Qué deben hacer los padres? 1.Escuche y sea sensible a las preocupaciones de su hijo/a. 2.Apoyelo y asegurele que estará a gusto y será exitoso en su nueva escuela. 3.Sea firme, constante, y justo cuando se trate de las reglas de la casa y la escuela. 4.Realce que los logros académicos y la asistencia a la universidad son una prioridad en su casa. What Should Parents Do? 9.Check their homework, but dont complete it for him/her. 10.Talk to your student about what they are learning in school and regularly monitor their progress. 11.If your child does not have any homework or studying to do, encourage him/her to read or to explore colleges and careers. 12.Encourage your child to set goals– help him/her connect school with their future plans (going to college and becoming a professional). 13.Teach your child about the importance of respecting others. (Students who are tolerant are less likely to mock peers and have a easier time making new friends). 14.Maintain a helpful and positive attitude. 15.Attend all school events and serve as a volunteer.

¿Qué deben hacer los padres? 9.Revise sus tareas, pero no las haga por ellos. 10.Platique con su estudiante sobre lo que están aprendiendo en la escuela y revise su progreso regularmente. 11.Si su hijo/a no tiene tarea ni necesita estudiar, anímelo a que lea, explorar las universidades y las carreras. 12.Anime a su hijo/a a desarrollar metas – ayúdele a ver la conexión entre la escuela y sus planes para el futuro (ir a la universidad y ser profesionista). 13.Enséñele a su hijo/a la importancia del respeto. Los estudiantes respetuosos no se burlan de sus compañeros y hacen amigos con más facilidad. 14.Mantenga una actitud servicial y positiva. Evite expresar actitudes negativas sobre el aprendizaje. 15.Asista a todos los eventos de la escuela y participe como voluntario.

What else should you do?/¿Qué más debes hacer?

Find out what your student is expected to learn in the 9th grade. Speak with your students teachers before your child has a problem. Learn about the specific skills and knowledge they are expected to master. Infórmese sobre lo que su hijo/a debe aprender en el grado 9. Hable con los maestros de su hijos antes que hay una problema.
