Gimmicks are “hooks” Your classroom management is shiny Students like shiny things Students come to like management, even helping you to reinforce your expectations

Classroom Management + Immersion = Easy Math The idea is that you know how to best manage your classroom and that you are able to convey that expectation to your students in the target language, using comprehensible input. Classroom management as instruction Target vocabulary is introduced via Classroom Management

In K ’ s case, she reinforces the obvious by declaring in the most uppity attitude she can muster (not too tough for her!) ”¡ Es obvio! ” By doing this, I ’ ve told her OK, so you like to give me major attitude. Cool, I like attitude. But I think you can do it with EVEN MORE attitude than that, and you ’ re smart enough to know when to do it on queue. That ’ s when it is OK. ¿ Entiendes? On queue, bueno. Off queue, malo (show death stare that pretty much says, “ go ahead, say something. I am crazy. ” ) The result is a more controlled Kailah and acquired vocabulary. Kailah might not remember what she ’ s supposed to say but her peers will.

K’s Catchphrases Prrrrróximo ¡Dios mío! Ay, pobrecito Ay, qué lindo ¡Tú saaaaabes! O sea ¡Posi! Peeeero (Beat box) Eso es. Uh. Eso es. Uh. Or, as we’d say in Argentina (“ll” words)
