This is a very important Mystery of the faith. All the readings of the Mass for today console us. And they are a challenge for us even to this day, because they are not limited in time. They can be applied all the time and in every place. We need to reflect upon what happened in those days, and see how we can apply them today.

God fulfilled the prophecies made by Isaiah, with the coming of Christ Jesus our Savior. The reign of God has come. But whenever we sin, we walk along evil paths. We are surrounded by the world that rejects God. That is why it is necessary to have a spirituality that includes frequenting the sacraments that Jesus instituted to help us be victorious today.

What is needed is someone who has the conviction to proclaim the message of salvation. St. Paul in (Romans 10:14) says: “How are men to call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a preacher?” They need help in order to practice the faith.

When John the Baptist baptized Jesus, the Holy Spirit descended upon him. He came in the form of a dove, and God said: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” The Holy Father Benedict XVI in his book “Jesus of Nazareth” has much to say about this. He says that when Luke refers to the Holy Spirit like a dove, it reminds us of Genesis 1:2 where it says that the Spirit hovered over the waters “like a dove.” This suggests that it is a simile for something that ultimately cannot be described.

The same heavenly voice is heard once more in the Transfiguration of Jesus, where “Listen to him” is added. To be noted is that the heavens opened over Jesus. His communion with the will of the Father fulfilled all righteousness. Heaven is the place where the will of God is fulfilled perfectly. God then proclaims who Jesus is, not what he does. He is the beloved son upon with whom the Father is pleased. Also to be noted is that here the Blessed Trinity begins to be manifested.

Let us pray for courage. Let us pray for the Holy Spirit. Let us pray for the courage to proclaim: “Here is your God ! ”
