What is the preterite tense? The preterit tense is used to express actions that happened once or were completed in the past.

A few things to remember before we get started Verbs with stem changes in the present, may not have a stem change in the preterite. Verbs with irregular yo forms in the present, may not have irregular yo forms in the preterite. Basically, don’t forget your present tense rules when conjugating verbs in the present but remember that these rules do not apply to the preterite.
