Regular –ar (present tense) Grammar Essential # 13

Conjugating regular –ar infinitives. Not all infinitives are regular. Regular means that all of the infinitives will conjugate in the same way. Ser is not regular. No other verb will conjugate like it. Conjugating means breaking an infinitive from a verb into verbs in sentences.

All the infinitives end in –ar. The –ar is called the infinitive ending. The rest of the word that is left is called the stem. Por ejemplo- Contestar (to answer) Contest – the stem -ar the infintive ending Practicar (to practice) practic – the stem -ar the infintive ending

Once you can separate the stem from the infinitive ending, you can conjugate. The first thing is to draw the subject pronoun form in order to get read to conjugate. It should look like this:

You will always use this chart When you are conjugating. It does not matter what you are conjugating. This is always the format. Yo Nosotros/as Tú Vosotros/as Él Ella Ud. Ellos Ellas Uds.

Now that you have the chart. Put the stem in the box Now that you have the chart. Put the stem in the box. We will use the infinitive usar = to use. Put the stem in all the boxes. Usar = to use Yo Nosotros/as Tú Vosotros/as Él Ella Ud. Ellos Ellas Uds.

Usar = to use Yo us- Nosotros/as Tú Vosotros/as Él Ella us- Ud. Ellos Ellas us- Uds.

Now that you have the stem in all the boxes, all you have to do is learn the ending that goes with each subject. Each box will have its own ending. We will go one by one. If you wanted to say, I use--- you would add an –o to the stem. Here is what it looks like in the chart.

Yo uso I use Nosotros/as us- Tú Vosotros/as Él Ella us- Ud. Ellos Usar = to use Yo uso I use Nosotros/as us- Tú Vosotros/as Él Ella us- Ud. Ellos Ellas us- Uds.

Yo uso I use Nosotros/as us- Tú Usas You use Vosotros/as Él Ella us- Usar- to use Yo uso I use Nosotros/as us- Tú Usas You use Vosotros/as Él Ella us- Ud. Ellos Ellas us- Uds.

Yo uso I use Nosotros/as Us- Tú Usas You use Vosotros/as Él Ella usa Usar- to use Yo uso I use Nosotros/as Us- Tú Usas You use Vosotros/as Él Ella usa Ud. He/She/You use Ellos Ellas us- Uds.

Yo uso I use Nosotros/as Usamos We use Tú Usas You use Vosotros/as Us- Usar- to use Yo uso I use Nosotros/as Usamos We use Tú Usas You use Vosotros/as Us- Él Ella usa Ud. He/She/You use Ellos Ellas us- Uds.

Yo uso I use Nosotros/as Usamos We use Tú Usas You use Vosotros/as Usar- to use Yo uso I use Nosotros/as Usamos We use Tú Usas You use Vosotros/as Usáis You all use Él Ella usa Ud. He/She/You use Ellos Ellas us- Uds.

Yo uso I use Nosotros/as Usamos We use Tú Usas You use Vosotros/as Usar = to use Yo uso I use Nosotros/as Usamos We use Tú Usas You use Vosotros/as Usáis You all use Él Ella usa Ud. He/She/You use Ellos Ellas usan- Uds. They/ you all use

Regular -ar endings Singular Plural Yo -o Nosotros -amos Tú -as Vosotros -áis Él, ella, Usted -a Ellos, Ellas, Uds. -an

You can conjugate all the –ar infinitives on página 51 like usar. Por examplo We study. Estudiar = to study Estudi- is the stem -amos is the nosotros ending We study = Nosotros estudiamos.

To make any sentence negative, put a no directly in front of the verb. Por ejemplo She carries the book. Ella lleva el libro. She doesn’t carry the book. Ella no lleva el libro.

Practice. He doesn’t draw. We don’t buy. You (s.fam) don’t sing. They don’t answer. I don’t listen.

Practice. He doesn’t draw. (dibujar) Él no dibuja. 2. We don’t buy. (comprar) Nosotros no compramos. 3. You (s.fam) don’t sing. (cantar) Tú no cantas. 4. They don’t answer. (contestar) Ellos no contestan. 5. I don’t listen. (escuchar) Yo no escucho.
