Preterite i > y Stem Change Verbs Verbs ending in –uir, such as destruir, have a spelling change in the preterite. The i becomes y in the Ud/él/ella and Uds./ellos/ellas forms.

Preterite i > y Stem Change Verbs Other verbs such as leer, creer, oír, and caerse, follow a similar pattern. These verbs are known as “dipthongs”
