The Subjunctive You know that the subjunctive cannot be used alone…it has to come after something else There are several triggers for the subjunctive Wish/wants Doubt Impersonal expressions

Quiero que tú vayas a la fiesta. Necesitas que ella haga la cama. WISH / WANT Triggers Querer que Esperar que Necesitar que Preferir que Quiero que tú vayas a la fiesta. Necesitas que ella haga la cama.

Quiero que yo vaya a la fiesta. The Subjunctive The “que” shows there is a change in subject If there is no change in subject, no “que” is used The verb will be left in the infinitive. I want to go to the party. Quiero que yo vaya a la fiesta. Quiero ir a la fiesta.

Él necesita hacer la tarea. Práctica He needs to do the homework. I want them to write the story. You hope that we get good grades. They prefer to go to Spain. Él necesita hacer la tarea. Yo quiero que ellos escriban el cuento. Tú esperas que saquemos buenas notas. Ellos prefieren ir a España.
