The verb ser is used to express the time of day The verb ser is used to express the time of day. Use es when referring to "one o'clock" and use son when referring to all other hours. It’s 1:00-Es la una. It’s (2:00-12:00)-Son las dos Son las tres. Son las cuatro. Son las cinco. Son las seis. Son las siete. Son las ocho. Son las nueve. Son las diez. Son las once. Son las doce.
The feminine article (la, las) is used before the hour because it refers to "la hora."
To say the time, you can….. Just say the time using the exact numbers 5:55 Son las cinco cincuenta y cinco.
It’s 3:15 Son las tres y quince. Son las tres y cuarto. (fifteen after) It’s 4:30 Son las cuatro y treinta. Son las cuatro y media. (half past)
When you want to add minutes to the hour, add “y” after the hour. Ejemplos: Son las cuatro y cinco. (It is 4:05) Es la una y diez. (It is 1:10)
Es (el) mediodía - it's noon.
Es (la) medianoche - it's midnight.
...de la mañana- in the morning. Son las siete de la mañana.
...de la tarde-in the afternoon. Son las tres y media de la tarde
...de la noche-in the evening. Son las diez y cuarto de la noche.
When someone does something during a time of day, but no specific time is given, you use the word, “por.” Por la mañana- Hago ejercicio por la mañana. Por la tarde- Yo estudio por la tarde. Por la noche- Yo duermo por la noche.
¿A qué hora?- At what time? (when?) Empieza- it begins. Termina- it ends. At: a + la(s) time. -¿A qué hora empieza la fiesta? - La fiesta empieza a las ocho (de la noche). -¿A qué hora termina el concierto? - El concierto termina a las once (de la noche).
¿Qué hora es? Son las doce y cuarto Son las cuatro y diez. (quince). Son las diez menos cinco. Son las nueve cincuenta y cinco. Es la una y media /treinta.
