Regular preterite verbs Acampé Acampamos Acampaste Acampasteis Acampó Acamparon -er and –ir preterite verbs Competí Competimos Competiste Competisteis Compitió Compitieron Notice that the yo and él/ ella/ ud. forms are the opposite of the present tense –er/-ir endings, plus an accent. These endings are similar to the –ar endings in the preterite, but all use an i.

Preterite of ver/dar Ver and dar are almost the same in the preterite tense; the only difference is the first letter Singular Plural yo vi (I saw) nosotros/nosotras vimos (we saw) tú viste (you [informal] saw) vosotros/vosotras visteis (you all [informal] saw) Él/ella/usted vio (he/she/you [formal] saw) Ellos/ellas/ustedes vieron (they/you all [formal] saw) Singular Plural yo di (I gave) nosotros/nosotras dimos (we gave) tú diste (you [informal] gave) vosotros/vosotras disteis (you all [informal] gave) Él/ella/usted dio (he/she/you [formal] gave) Ellos/ellas/ustedes dieron (they/you all [formal] gave)

Preterite of ir/ser and hacer Ir and ser have the same conjugations in the preterite. To decide which verb is being used, look for a after the verb (ir). Hacer changes its stem to hic- (except for él/ ella/ ud.  hiz). Notice that it has unique endings! fui fuimos fuiste fuisteis fue fueron hice hicimos hiciste hicisteis hizo hicieron

Verbs with irregular stems in the preterite The verbs with irregular stems in the preterite are: Notice that these verbs have the same endings as hacer (a mix of regular –ar and –er/-ir endings) and no accents! Estuve Supimos Pusiste Tuvisteis Pudo Hicieron

Stem-changing –ir verbs in the preterite Verbs that end in –ir and have an e  i, e  ie or o  ue stem change in the present tense are going to stem change in the preterite. They will keep the regular –ir verb endings for the preterite. These verbs will stem change in the 3rd person only Dormir (to sleep) durmió durmieron Pedir (to ask for) pidió pidieron Seguir (to follow) siguió siguieron Preferir (to prefer) prefirió prefirieron Vestirse (to get dressed) se vistió se vistieron Servir (to serve) sirvió sirvieron Competir (to compete) compitió compitieron

-car, -gar, -zar verbs Verbs that end in –car, -gar, or –zar have a spelling change in the yo form only in the preterite tense. This spelling change is for pronuncation purposes. -car verbs change from c  qu -gar verbs change from g  gu -zar verbs change from z  c

Venir, querer, decir, traer The verbs venir, querer, decir, and traer are all irregular in the preterite. These verbs are like the others learned with irregular stems- they share the same endings. Their stems are: Venir  vin- Querer  quis- Decir  dij- Traer  traj-
