Stem changers in the present tense: How do they work? In some conjugations of the verb, a letter in the stem/root changes. Then they use the same endings as regular verbs. Ejemplos: I will be giving you some examples of stem changing verbs in the preterite. See what you can notice about when and how they are different than a normal verb. We’ve already noted that –ar and –er verbs that stem change in the present DON’T in the preterite so we’ll stick to –ir verbs.
