Possessive Adjectives Español 1 – Capítulo 5 Gramática 1

Ya aprendimos… In Spanish, we do NOT have “apostrophe ‘s’” phrases. Instead, we use the preposition “de” and the name of a person or a pronoun to show possession of an object. ¿De dónde es la madre de Juan? Where is Juan’s mom from? La madre de Juan es de Puebla. Juan’s mom is from Puebla. ¿Es la mochila de ella? Is the backpack hers?

También… We also use possessive adjectives to show ownership or relationships between people. We also have possessive adjectives in English! My, your(s), his, her(s), our(s), their(s) Possessive adjectives are placed before the noun in a sentence. In Spanish, while the possessive adjectives refer to the owner, their form agrees in gender and number with the noun that comes after them.

The possessive adjectives in Spanish are: Owner Possessive Adjective Yo Mi Mis Nosotros(as) Nuestro / Nuestra Nuestros / Nuestras Tú Tu Tus Vosotros(as) Vuestro / Vuestra Vuestros / Vuestras Usted Su Sus Ustedes Él Ellos Ella Ellas Remember: possessive adjectives agree in number and gender with the nouns that come after them number gender

¿De dónde es la madre de Juan? Su madre es de Puebla. In English, the possessive adjectives his, her, and their tell whether something belongs to a male, a female, or more than one person. In Spanish, the possessive adjective su has many possible meanings (his, her, its, your, their). Context usually makes the meaning clear. ¿De dónde es la madre de Juan? Su madre es de Puebla. (Where is Juan’s mom from? His mom is from Puebla)
