PETROLEUM IN MEXICO: FIFTY YEARS OF PETROLEUM IN MEXICO: A BRIEF HISTORY FROM 1900 TO 1950 U.S.A IS THE REAL OWNER OF THE MEXICAN PETROLEUM?: FIVE DECADES IN THE BEGINNING OF THE XX Alexis Andrei Moreno Ayala

ABSTRACT In 1901, began the oil drilling in the first oilfield, called “Ébano”, in San Luis Potosí. But crude oil production commercial results appear in 1904 with the drilling of La Pez-1 well. In 1921, the oil industry in Mexico reached the maximum production in the first stage of exploration carried out in the country. In the next years, the principal oilfields decreased their production and the gas production increased. The foreign oil companies and the workpeople had labor conflicts, the industrial activities decreased and the labor tension increased. In 1938, the oil industry expropriation was a consequence of a series of problems like the national production reduction, the low price in the oil crude, constitutional reforms and tax liens. In the same year, Petróleos Mexicanos was created as a parastatal company and the unique oil operator in Mexico. The tension for a second word war, the find of oilfields in Venezuela of a lower cost and the depletion of the oilfields in Mexico make easy the exit of the foreign oil companies without international armed conflicts.
