or just familiar with them. In Spanish, both saber and conocer mean “to know” but they can NOT be used interchangeably. The difference between the two verbs has to do with whether you know information about someone/something or just familiar with them. Both verbs are irregular in the “yo” form.

Uses of saber To know a fact To (not) know if … To have information about something To know how to do something Ex: Yo sé el número de teléfono de Paco. I know Paco’s phone number. Ex: Yo no sé si trabaja hoy. I don’t know if he works tody. Ex: Sabemos que vive en Madrid. We know that they live in Madrid. Ex: ¿Sabes nadar bien? Do you know how to swim well?

Uses of saber A form of saber followed by an infinitive means “to know how to do something.” DO NOT use “como” between saber and second verb. Ex: Ellos saben nadar. = They know how to swim. Ex: Yo sé hablar español. = I know how to speak Spanish.

Uses of Conocer To know people or places To be familiar with something Ex: Yo conozco a Roberto Martínez. I know Roberto Martínez. Ex: Ellos conocen la historia de México. They know the history of Mexico. Ex: Mi hermano conoce España. My brother knows (is familiar with) Spain.

SABER is usually followed by… Santa sabe si tú te portas bien o mal. “si” = if  question words  ¿Sabes dónde vive? info or facts  Él sabe tu nombre. verbs  Yo sé hablar español.

Conocer is followed directly by… a person  Yo conozco a tu mamá. a place  Ella conoce España. a thing  Ud. conoce la música de México.

Be careful NOT to mistake the subject of a question as the person known. ¿ ______ Juan a tu mamá? Conoce ¿ ______ Juan quién es tu mamá? Sabe
