El Pretérito de los verbos

El Pretérito: is a PAST tense (“-ed”) S. - Single or series of completed actions I. - Interrupting action M. - Main event B. - Beginning or End A. - Arrivals or Departures I went to the store. I bought a shirt. I worked yesterday.

The stem for regular verbs in the pretérito is the normal infinitive stem. You conjugate like present tense verbs, but the endings are different. Tomar tom- Hablar habl- Comer com- Beber beb- Abrir abr- Salir sal-

Pretérito endings for -ar verbs are: -é -aste -ó -amos -asteis -aron

Por ejemplo: (-ar verbs) tomar Yo tomé Tú tomaste Él/Ella/Ud.tomó Nosotros tomamos Vosotros tomasteis Ellos/Ellas/Uds. tomaron She drank coffee. Ella tomó el café.

Por ejemplo: (-er / -ir verbs) comer Yo comí Tú comiste Él/Ella/Ud comió Nosotros comimos Vosotros comisteis Ellos/Ellas/Uds. comieron Did you eat bananas? ¿Comiste tú las bananas?

REMEMBER: accents on the “yo” form and the “él / ella / Ud.” form -ar / -ir “nosotros” form is the same in present and pretérito
