Stem changing verbs: What kinds of stem changers are there? 4 kinds: e:ie, o:ue, e:i, u:ue How are stem changers like regular verbs? They have the same endings as regular verbs when you conjugate them. How are stem changers different from regular verbs? In the “boot” (all but the nosotros and vosotros forms) they have a change in the root/stem of the verb.

Jugar (u:ue) Only u:ue stem changer in Spanish! When followed by a sport or game you use: Jugar + a + definite article (el/la/los/las) + name of sport or game. Examples: Yo juego al vóleibol. Ustedes juegan al baloncesto.

Comenzar y Empezar You need to use “a” when comenzar or empezar are followed by an infinitive. Examples: Ellos comienzan a jugar a las ocho. They begin to play at 8. Yo empiezo a escribir ahora. I start to write now.

Pensar + [infinitive] vs. Pensar + en To plan or intend to do something Pensar + en To think about someone or something Examples: Ella piensa estudiar. She plans/intends to study. Ella piensa en su novio. She thinks about her boyfriend.
