What is ESOL? ¿Qué es ESOL? ESOL stands for English Speakers of Other Languages. The program is designed to assist, teach, and support students who speak other languages or have family that speak other languages in the home. Students are scored with a language assessment test and grouped by English proficiency levels. Some students come to a small group with the ESOL teacher, and others are monitored independently by the ESOL teacher. ESOL representa aprendedores de ingles o otros Idiomas nativos. El diseñado del programa es para ayudar, enseñar, y para apoyar a estudiantes que hablan otros idiomas o tienen familia que habla otros idiomas en el hogar. What does this mean? ¿Qué significa esto? My child will have equal opportunities at school. My child will have accommodations in class due to the fact that he/she is acquiring a new language. What can I do at home? ¿Qué puedo hacer en casa? Look at your childs agenda daily. The agenda serves as a communication tool between you and the classroom teacher. Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and eats well. Get the personal ID codes for the power schools and review the grades your child has with your child. Photo identification is needed. A drivers license is preferred, but a government type photo ID is accepted. Visitors must wear school-issued ID tags while in the building. Write a note if you do not go to the doctor. (This will be unexcused, but an explanation is still needed.) Your child is allowed 10 unexcused absences. After 5 absences or tardies, the attendance clerk and principal will have to meet with you. Excessive absences are turned over to the school district and family courts. They must not have either vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school. Make sure you keep phone numbers for emergencies updated with the school personnel. A consent form must be filled out in the nurses office to administer the medication. Medicine CANNOT be sent to school on the bus or in a book bag. Any prescription medication must have a medication form filled out by the doctor to give it at school. Only medications that must be given 4 times a day should be given at school. Medications that need to be given 3 times a day should be given before school, after school, and at bedtime. What if my child has head lice? ¿Qué pasa si mi hijo tiene piojos? If your child is sent home with head lice, he/she must be treated according to doctors/nurses directions. A parent must bring the child back to school and have him/her checked by the nurse before returning to class. Changes for car or bus transportation in which Ms. Black has paperwork already completed can be written and sent in with the child. All changes must be written. Phone calls are not accepted for transportation changes. All changes need to be addressed before 12:00, not close to dismissal times. Checking Out Library Books Tomando prestados los libros de la biblioteca Students may check out books for two weeks at a time. If a student fails to turn the book in on time a late fee of ten cents a day is charged to the student. There are fees for lost and damaged books. Replacement is at cost. If the child moves to another school in our district and does not pay money owed to the school library, the record will follow the child to the new school.
