rules Si + TENSE ONE, TENSE TWO There are clear grammatical rules about which tenses should be used in these cases. Have a look at the next slide and see if you can work out what the rules are. (This should just be a refresher on si clauses) You’re looking for: Si + TENSE ONE, TENSE TWO

Si fuera... Si tuviera mucho dinero, tendría un palacio Si hiciera karate, sería muy fuerte Si hubiera mas puestos, ganara más dinero Si el gobierno fuera mejor, no habría tantos problemas Si trabajara mas, tendría mas éxito en los exámenes Si hablara japonés, iría a Japón If I had loads of money, I would have a palace If I did karate, I would be very strong If there were more jobs, I would earn more money If the government were better, there wouldn’t be so many problems If I worked more, I would be more successful in the exams If I spoke Japanese, I would go to Japan

The rules… Si + IMPERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE, CONDITIONAL For this type of condition (if I were, if I did etc) Si + IMPERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE, CONDITIONAL This always comes up on question 9 in AS, and on the translation in the A2 question If you’re not 100% on forming this type of sentence, revisit my si clauses tutorial on Sophia.

Other types of si clause We are going to look at the differences between 2 different types of si clauses Have a look at the examples on the next slide. They are in 2 groups – what’s the difference? Si + TENSE ONE, TENSE TWO

Si hubiera sido… If I did karate, I would be very strong If there were more jobs, I would earn more money If the government were better, there wouldn’t be so many problems If I worked more, I would be more successful in the exams If I had done karate, I would have been very strong If there had been more jobs, I would have earned more money If the government had been better, there wouldn’t have been so many problems If I had worked more, I would have been more successful in the exams

Imperfect Subjunctive For use with Si clauses HABER en el condicional + el participio pasado Si hubiera Si hubieras Si hubiéramos Si hubierais Si hubieran hablado comido salido

Conditional Perfect I would have HABER en el condicional + el participio pasado Habría Habrías Habríamos Habríais Habrían hablado comido salido

Alugunos ejemplos If I had done karate, I would have been very strong If there had been more jobs, I would have earned more money If the government had been better, there wouldn’t have been so many problems If I had worked more, I would have been more successful in the exams

some thoughts The order of the two parts of the sentences can be switched around – watch for the si This is not the only si clause, there are a couple of different types Stems for imperfect subjunctive

some examples Si fuera Si tuviera Si hubiera Si supiera
