GEOGRAPHY. Wales is hilly, and for the most part, a mountainous country, dominated by the Cambrians, central and north, and by the Brecon Beacons of the south. Along its eastern border with England, wide river valleys cover the land. The highest mountain in Wales, Mt. Snowdon, rises to 1,085 meters. The Brecon Beacons in the south and southeast are a series of forested rolling hills, low mountains and valleys, that include the Black Mountains. The area is famous for deep caves, gorges and waterfalls. The land is replete with small lakes, rivers and streams. A few of the larger rivers include the Dee, Severn, Tywi, Usk and Wye.

HISTORY. According to historians, the arrival of the British Celtic in the British Isles dates from the 6th century BC. At that time it was spoken Celtic, until the Romans invaded Great Britain in 43 d.C. and introduced the Latin alphabet and written tradition. Therefore, Latin became the official language, the most spoken. Caernarfon Castle, often anglicized as Carnarvon Castle, is a medieval fortress in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, north-west Wales cared for by Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service. There was a motte-and-bailey castle in the town of Caernarfon from the late 11th century until 1283 when King Edward I of England began replacing it with the current stone structure. The Edwardian town and castle acted as the administrative center of north Wales and as a result the defenses were built on a grand scale. There was a deliberate link with Caernarfon's Roman past and the Roman fort of Segontium is nearby.

SPORTS The most popular sports in Wales are rugby union and association football. Like the other countries of the United Kingdom, Wales enjoys independent representation in major world sporting events such as the Rugby World Cup and in the FIFA World Cup, but competes as the England and Wales cricket team and as Great Britain in many other competitions, including the Olympics. The Millennium Stadium is the largest stadium in Wales. Located in Cardiff, it is the home of the Wales national rugby union team with a capacity of 74,505.
