Verb Review and Introduction to “estar”

Repaso--conjugation you now know how to conjugate the irregular verbs ser (to be), gustar (to like), and tener (to have), and regular verbs ending in -ar you know that all of the forms of the irregular verbs must be memorized, but many verbs ending in –ar use the same set of endings that are attached to the verb stem

estar—to be Both ser and estar translate to “to be” in English However, they are used very differently in Spanish

Ser v. estar use forms of the verb ser to describe permanent conditions of someone, like personality, looks, or origin. Yo soy inteligente. Ellos son de Mexico. use forms of the verb estar for location or temporary conditions Yo estoy en la clase. Ella está en el baño. Nosotros estamos bien. Felipe está mal hoy.

estar—to be (location or temporary) Both ser and estar are irregular verbs. You cannot just add regular –ar endings to the stem of estar, though it is similar. Copy and memorize the following chart for the forms of estar:
