Frases Útiles (Useful Phrases) ¿Qué hora es? What time is it? Es la una. It’s one o’clock. Son las… It’s … o’clock (used with any hour except one o’clock) Ejemplos: Son las dos. It’s two o’clock. Son las diez. It’s ten o’clock. Son las cinco. It’s five o’clock.

Minutes After the Hour When we want to talk about how many minutes come after the hour, we add “y + number of minutes” to the hour phrase. We use this phrase when the minutes range from 0-30. Ejemplos: 12:05  Son las doce y cinco. 12:10  Son las doce y diez. 12:15  Son las doce y cuarto. We use “cuarto” for fifteen minutes after the hour because fifteen minutes is a quarter of an hour. 12:30  Son las doce y media. “Media” means half in Spanish, so we use this when it’s thirty minutes past the hour (30 minutes = ½ hour)

Ejemplos: 1:00  Es la una. 12:50  Es la una menos diez. 12:45  Es la una menos cuarto. We use “cuarto” here for the same reason—because fifteen minutes is a quarter of an hour

AM or PM? To indicate time of day (AM or PM), add the following phrases to the end of the time sentence: …de la mañana. …in the morning …de la tarde. …in the afternoon/evening …de la noche. …at night Ejemplos: It’s three o’clock in the morning  Son las tres de la mañana. It’s 8:15 at night  Son las ocho y cuarto de la noche. It’s 4:40 in the afternoon  Son las cinco menos veinte de la tarde.
