EL PRETÉRITO Preterit Tense

The preterite is one of several past tenses. You use the preterite to talk about actions that you or others COMPLETED in the past. The preterite answers the questions What happened? What did you do? The preterite is one of several past tenses.

Stem + subject pronoun ending Regular Verbs: drop the ending and add the subject pronoun endings to the stem: HABL…AR COM…ER / VIV…IR -é -aste -ó -í -iste -ió -amos -asteis -aron -imos –isteis –ieron Stem + subject pronoun ending

Notice that the 1st person and 3rd person conjugations have an ACCENT MARK on the last vowel. (Yo) hablé. Usted/él/ella habló.

SPELLING CHANGES Spelling changes occur only in the 1st person, “YO” form. These are all –ar verbs. These verbs still use regular –ar endings.

“haber” in the preterit The preterite form of hay is hubo. Ex: Hubo mucho desorden hoy en la clase de inglés. (There was a lot of chaos today in English class)

Irregular Groups Longer verbs that have the SAME stem as those above follow the SAME patterns. For example, contraer/traer, deshacer, hacer, prevenir/venir, etc.
