Voluntad y deseo All expressions of will (recommendations, advice, demands or requests) require the subjunctive in subordinate clauses. The subject of the main clause should be different than the subject of the subordinate clause. Mi mamá quiere que yo estudie para abogada. Main clause Sub clause
If there is no change between subordinate and main clause, you use the infinitive Mi tía quiere ir mañana Mi tía quiere que vayamos mañana. Verbs of volition include the following Querer (e-ie) Pedir (e-i) Desear Sugerir (e-ie) Mandar Aconsejar Necesitar Decir recomendar (e-ie)
Yo quiero que Uds. salgan temprano. Tengo mucho que hacer. I want you guys to leave early. I have a lot to do. Recomiendo que lleves un abrigo. Hace mucho frío hoy. I recommend you bring a sweater. It´s very cold today. Los niños ruegan que los dejemos comer sorbete para cena. The children beg us to let them eat ice cream for supper.
Certain verbs of volition (aconsejar, mandar, pedir, and sugerir) are often preceded by an indirect object pronoun, which indicates the subject of the verb in the subjunctive. Te sugiero que vayas al médico Le aconsejo que venga temprano.
