Estaba hablando con mi novio. Use the imperfect of the verb estar plus the present participle (gerundio) of another verb. Estaba hablando con mi novio. I was talking to my boyfriend.

When using direct, indirect object pronouns or reflexive pronouns you have two options: Attach them to the present participle Place the pronouns before the conjugated form of estar Remember to put an accent!! Te estaba buscando. Estaba buscándote. Remember to put an accent!! Se lo estaba cocinando. Estaba cocinándoselo.

When an ongoing action in the past is interrupted by another event, the imperfect progressive is used for the ongoing action and the preterite to describe the interruption. Estaban caminando cuando empezó a llover.
