 To talk about actions or events that took place in the past you will use the preterite tense  The preterite is use to express the following: 1. A single action or a series of actions that are totally completed within a particular period of time in the past  Felipe limpió su cuarto.  Tuve dos meses de vacaciones el año pasado. 2. The beginning or the end of an action in the past  Empezó a llover a las tres.  Terminé el informe esta mañana.

 Some verbs have different English equivalents in the preterite:  saber (to know; in the preterite: found out)  Yo no sé lo que paso.  Pedro supo lo que había pasado.  conocer (to know, be acquaintance with; preterite: met for the first)  -Elena, conoces el primo de Carlos?  -Lo conocí anoche.  poder (to be able; preterite : succeed in, managed to)  Mis padres siempre pueden tomar el tren de las dos.  Ayer no pudeiron llegar a tiempo.  querer (to want; preterite: tried; in the negative preterite: refused)  Quieres ir conmigo?  Carolina quiso ir conmigo.  Eduardo no quiso ir conmigo.

 Expressions that delineate a particular period of time in the past or indicate the beginning or the end of a past action are often used with the preterite. Some of the expressions are: entoncesanteayeruna vez de momentoen febrero (marzo, etc.)anoche ayerel lunes (martes, etc.)la semana pasada aquel día (mes, ano) de repenteel mes/ el ano pasado aquella semana por fin en 1954 (1999, etc.) el otro díauna noche, un díael 25 de julio, etc.
