John 17:11b Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed, saying: Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are.

12 When I was with them I protected them in your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you. I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy completely.

14 I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.

17 Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. 19 And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth.

Gospel of the Lord

Reflections on John 17:11b - 19 Reflexiónes en Juan 17:11b - 19 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. May 7, 2008 The Gospel of St. John chapter 17 is a prayer of Jesus in union with the Father. He knew that his hour to depart from this world had come. His last few words are very profound, and full of love. We want to examine those words.

Jesus asked the Father to glorify your Son that the Son may glorify him. To glorify means to give honor. Note well that the request is not for selfish reasons. John Marsh (in his book Saint John, page 561) notes that it is a petition made with love and compassion, for the honor and glory of his Holy Name. The glory of God is manifested by means of the testimony, service and sacrifice of the Son and of those who believe in his Name, so that all may share in the glory of the Father.

St. Ignatius Loyola taught us Jesuits a motto: For the Greater Glory of God. In all our institutions: schools and churches, we find written in inscriptions: AMDG. (This is an abbreviated form from the Latin.) It is part of the Our Father which says: Hallowed be your Name.

Actually it is a positive version of the Second Commandment of the Law of God, which says: You shall not take the Name of the Lord your God in vain. In the Spiritual Exercises #38 St. Ignatius says that the use of the Name of God should always be with due consideration, reverence, and respect.

In John 17:4 Jesus says to the Father: I glorified you on earth, by accomplishing the work you gave me to do. We are reminded that Jesus always went about doing good, preaching, teaching, healing, casting out demons, and giving food to the hungry (Acts 10.38). He taught us how to say the Our Father which says: Your kingdom come… All of his work was to bring about the Kingdom. That is how he gave glory to God!

The petition of Jesus in John 17:5 is: Father, glorify me at your side, with that glory that I had with you before the world begun. In this manner, Jesus claims his divinity. Further, in John 17:22 Jesus says that he has given his followers that glory also, so that they may be one with the Father and the Son, and with one another. When we have unity among ourselves, we manifest the presence of the Spirit among us.

In verse 11 Jesus says: I am no longer in this world. One feels that Jesus has crossed a threshold between time and eternity. To be in the threshold is to be at the point of departure at the entrance. Jesus is already on his way to the Father. He is somewhere between this world and the Fathers presence. He is right at the door!

Therefore this is called the Last Discourse of the Lord. It is transcendent. It surpasses the limits of time and space. From heaven and beyond the grave Jesus is already speaking to these disciples of all time and in all places.

Note well the frequency of the word: Father. It is in an intimate tone. In effect we are party to a heavenly family conversation. The relationship between the Son and the Father is established and is expressed with loving communication. It is a conversation that can be heard. It is a dialogue, not a monologue. This conversation of love is the heart of the celestial family.

How beautiful it would be if we would learn to do the same in our families. To have a loving conversation at the table daily (a dialogue between Parents and their children). Yes! Jesus wants to be there with us, together with Our Lady, his Mother.

Holy Mass is a supper, and is celebrated like the Last Super of Jesus, because that was the wish of the Lord, our brother, (that we do this in memory of him). It is a celestial banquet. There we anticipate the eternal banquet. It is to participate in the wedding feast of the Lamb. Revelations 19:9 says: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding banquet of the Lamb. Only the one who is prepared with his white vestment is worthy to participate.

The white vestment is the holy deeds of the saints. There we shall seat with our heavenly Father at the head of the table, Jesus at his right hand, and the Holy Spirit of Love over all. What a blessing! What a privilege! How beautiful! By means of the readings, the Father and the Son speak to us. In our hearts we know that the Lord loves us. Glory!

¡Gloria!
