Reflexive Verbs

What is a reflexive verb? You may have noticed many verbs that end in –se. These are called reflexive verbs. Ej. Despertarse (to wake up) Acostarse (to go to bed) Bañarse (to bathe )

Why are they called “reflexive”? Reflexive verbs indicate that the subject is doing the action to himself! Think of your reflection: What do you see? For example: I take a shower or I shower myself. I am doing the action to myself.

In English reflexive pronouns end in -self (-selves)... I cut myself shaving. She looked at herself in the mirror. We embarassed ourselves. The small children dressed themselves.

Reflexive pronouns normally are placed directly before the conjugated verb, but they may be (but do not have to be) attached to infinitives. Also, they attach to affirmative commands.

Directly before a conjugated verb (Yo / lavarme los dientes) Yo me lavo los dientes. = I brush my teeth. (Ella / peinarse) Ella se peina. = She combs her hair. (Tú / afeitarse) Tú te tienes que afeitar. = You have to shave (yourself).

Attached to end of infinitive Tengo que lavarme los dientes = I have to brush my teeth Les gusta mantenerse en forma. = They like to stay in shape. Vamos a acostarnos temprano. = We’re going to go to bed early.

Attached to end of affirmative command ¡Despiértate! = Wake up! ¡Ponte la ropa! = Put on your clothes! ¡Levántate! = Get up!

Don‘t Forget Remove the –se before conjugating. Conjugate the verb as you would conjugate any present tense verb. The reflexive pronoun goes BEFORE the conjugated verb. Don’t get tripped up by those stem- changing verbs…they still change!
