Nuevos amigos, nuevas oportunidades Unidad 5.2

In this lesson you will learn:  Say what would or would not happen  Report what someone said  Talk about the day’s activities  Conditional tense  Reported speech

El Truco-Argentina

Conditional Tense  In English, you form the conditional by placing would before the main verb.  In Spanish the conational is one word.  Yo iría Paris.  I would go to Paris.

 To say what someone would or wouldn’t do, use the conditional tense.  All verbs have the same endings:  Llevaríaíamos  Resolveríasíais  Discutiríaían  Yo llevaría un paraguas en caso que llueva

Verbs that are irregular in the future tense have the same irregular stem in the conditional.  Haber  Poder  Querer  Saber  Poner  Salir  Tener  Venir  Decir  hacer  Habr-  Podr-  Querr-  Sabr-  Pondr-  Saldr-  Tendr-  Vendr-  Dir-  Har Ex. 8 & 9 pg 305

Reported speech  In English, to report what someone said, you can use the simple past, the past progressive, or the conditional tens.  In Spanish, a variety of tenses can be used for reported speech as well.  I said that he lived in Peru.  I said that he was living in Peru.  I said that he would live in Peru.

 Use reported speech to relay information about what someone said, without using a direct quote.  To report what people said they did, use the preterite. Nico dijo “Fui al teatro.” = Nico dijo que fue al teatro.  To report what people were planning to do, use the imperfect. Nico dijo “voy al teatro.” = Nico dijo que iba al teatro.  To report what people would do in the future, use the conditional. Nico dijo “Iré al teatro.” = Nico dijo que iría al teatro.

Decir and the subjunctive!!!  Remember that if you use decir to express what someone told another person to do, you use the subjunctive for the second verb.  Nico te dice que vayas al cine.

Change to reported speech 1. La maestra dijo “yo voy a hablar a Juan.” 2. Los estudiantes dijeron “vimos a Juan ayer.” 3. Nosotros dijimos “sacaremos una buena nota hoy.” 4. Tú dijiste “hay muchos chicos inteligentes en esta escuela.” 5. Usted dijo “voy a pasar lo bien en la fiesta.”
