Some preliminaries Think of some examples that you already know: Por favor. Por el momento. ¿Hay un banco por aquí? Este regalo es para ti. Trabajo para un restaurante chino.

What’s the difference? There is a difference in the way that the objects of the prepositions are perceived. Rather than give you a long theoretical explanation, I’ll give you an acronym for para : P.E.R.F.E.C.T.

P.E.R.F.E.C.T. Use para when talking about: Purpose - “in order to + infinitive” or for Express opinion Recipient Future dates, deadlines, or events Employment Comparison Toward a specific place

Purpose P urpose: “in order to + infinitive” or for Estudio para sacar buenas notas. I study in order to get good grades. Trabajo para ganar dinero. I work in order to earn money. Esta botella es para agua. This bottle is for water. El jabón es para el baño. The soap is for the bathroom.

Express Opinion E xpress opinion Para mí, la clase de español es la más interesante. For me, Spanish class is the most interesting. Para él, la moda no es importante. For him, fashion is not important.

Recipient R ecipient: the person or entity that receives something Este regalo es para ti. This gift is for you. Los estudiantes tienen la tarea para la profesora. The students have homework for the teacher.

Future F uture dates, deadlines, or events Esta tarea es para mañana y el proyecto es para el lunes. This homework is for ( due) tomorrow and the project is for ( due) Monday. No tenemos tarea para manaña. We don’t have homework for (due) tomorrow.

Employment E mployment/Career Trabajo para un restaurante chileno. I work for a Chilean restaurant. Las profesoras trabajan para DSHS. The teachers work for D SHS. Ella estudia para doctora. (Means para ser) She studies to be a doctor.

Comparison Para un niño de cinco años, lee y escribe muy bien. For being a five year old boy, he read and write very well. Para un chico, Rafa se ve muy bien en su falda con sequins. Para un americano, habla muy bien el español. For being an American, he speaks very good Spanish.

Toward Toward a specific place Ella camina para el parque. She walks towards the park. Los astronautas van para la luna. The astronauts go to the moon. El mes pasado, salimos para Madrid. Las month, we went to Madrid.

What about ‘por’? Essentially, por is used in all instances when P.E.R.F.E.C.T. does not apply. This acronym However, if you like to collect acronyms, here is one to use with por: A.T.T.R.A.C.T.E.D covers many, but not all, of the main uses of por. There are many idiomatic expressions that use por.

Transportation Means / Sending Messages Viajo a Madrid por avión. I travel to Madrid by plane. Hablaremos por computadora, correo, , y teléfono. We will talk on the computer, mail, and telephone.

Reason Reason (In English why or due to / because of + infinitive or object) ¿ Por qué llegaste tarde? Por el tráfico. Why did you arrive late? Because of the traffic No puedo trabajar por estar enfermo. I cannot work because of being sick. Soy más fuerte por tener la experiencia. I am stronger because of having the experience. Paco es popular por su personalidad. Paco is very popular due to his personality. ¿ Por qué no jugaste anoche? Por la lluvia. Why didn’t you play last night? Because of the rain.

Cost Pagué 20 euros por esta chaqueta. I paid 20 Euros for this jacket. Pago veinte pesos por esta blusa de seda. I pay twenty pesos for this silk blouse.
