El verbo "Gustar"

Me gusta is often translated as "I like." Ejemplos: Me gusta la pizza. = (I like pizza.) Me gusta el carro rojo. = (I like the red car).

Actually, the verb gustar does not translate well into English. Por ejemplo: Me gusta el libro. In English, we would say, "I like the book." but the meaning is really closer to... "I am pleased by the book," or "The book pleases me," or "The book is pleasing to me."

Here is a very useful thing to remember: In Spanish, we don't say "I like it." Instead, we say, "It pleases me." The verb is GUSTAR, and for the "me" in English, we use the Spanish word me. Me is one of the indirect object pronouns in Spanish. Try saying the Spanish sentence below about 20 times, right now, to get the hang of it: Coffee pleases me. Me gusta el café. Then say the following 20 times, as well: No me gusta la espinaca. Spinach does not please me.

Me gusta el café Coffee pleases me

Otro ejemplo: Le gustan los panqueques.= (The pancakes please him.) In English, we would say: He likes pancakes.

The verb gustar is conjugated to go with the thing you like, which is actually the subject of the sentence.

Ejemplos: Me gusta la manzana. = (I like the apple.) Me gustan las galletas. = (I like cookies.)

Remember, the verb is conjugated to agree with the subject of the sentence. With gustar the subject is the thing or things you like. *Use gusta if the thing you like is singular. Ejemplo: Me gusta el libro. = (I like the book.) *Use gustan if the things you like are plural. Ejemplo: Me gustan los tacos. = (I like tacos.)

Gustar is almost always used with indirect object pronouns. Singular Plural Me (me) Te (you, familiar) Le (you, formal/him/her) Nos (us) Les (you/them)

You can also use gustar with an infinitive Me gusta nadar. Te gusta correr. Nos gusta leer.

To say someone does not like something or does not like to do something use "no" before the indirect object pronoun. Ejemplos: No me gusta el pescado. No le gusta jugar con su hermano.

¡OJO! Who likes the chair??? Le gusta la silla.

For purpose of clarification The sentence may begin with a clarifying prepositional phrase: *A él le gusta el helado. *A ella le gusta la música. *A usted le gusta jugar tenis.

Check your knowledge! We like Spanish. She likes the book. He likes to dance. They (males) do not like the flowers. You (familiar) like the shoes. We like to run. You (formal) do not like ice cream. (A usted) no le gusta el helado. I like to read. A nosotros nos gusta el español. A él le gusta bailar. A ella le gusta el libro. A ti te gustan los zapatos. A ellos no les gustan las flores. A nosotros nos gusta correr. A mi me gusta leer.
