Remember... ● The imperfect tense is a descriptive tense that tells what was going on. ● The preterite tense is an action oriented tense that describes completed events in the past. These events can interrupt what was going on. ➢ Two important words to know when narrating in the past: ○ mientras → while (used before verbs in the imperfect) ○ cuando → when (used before verbs in the preterite)

Preterite and Imperfect used together Imperfect: Yo leía y estudiaba. Preterite: Mi amigo llegó a mi casa. Together: Mientras (while) yo leía y estudiaba, mi amigo llegó a mi casa. OR Cuando mi amigo llegó a mi casa, yo leía y estudiaba.

Preterite and Imperfect used together Imperfect: Ella escuchaba la música. Preterite: Su hermanito empezó a llorar. Together: Ella escuchaba la música cuando (when) su hermanito empezó a llorar. OR Mientras ella escuchaba la música, su hermanito empezó a llorar.
