1 5A – El pretérito y el imperfecto Using 2 past tenses together in one sentence

2 preterite / preterite Use 2 preterite verbs together when stating simple facts which occured at a defined time period in the past. Anoche, fuimos al cine y vimos una película. Last night, we went to the movies and we saw a film.

3 imperfect / imperfect Use 2 imperfect verbs together when expressing simultaneous ongoing actions in the past. Sudábamos mientras corríamos. We were sweating while we were running.

4 imperfect / preterite Use an imperfect verb in the first clause and a preterite verb in the second clause when expressing an ongoing action that was interrupted. Comíamos en el restaurante cuando Pablo entró. We were eating at the restaurant when Pablo entered.

5 preterite / imperfect Same as imperfect / preterite, just reverse the order of the information. Ella me llamó por teléfono cuando tomábamos el examen. She called me on the phone when we were taking the test.
