3 The preterite and imperfect are both past tense in Spanish, but we use them in different situations. The following are the situations when we would use the imperfect tense.

4 I MPERFECT W eather Estaba lloviendo. It was raining. Hacía calor. It was hot.

5 I MPERFECT A ge Cuando eran niñas eran pequeñas, pero estaban muy contentas. When they were children, they were small, but they were very happy. Cuando tenía cinco años... When I was 5 years old….

6 I MPERFECT T ime Era muy tarde. Eran las cinco de la tarde. It was very late. It was five o’clock in the afternoon. Era viernes, el 13 de octubre. It was Friday, October 13.

7 I MPERFECT E motions/feelings Él estaba aburrido. He was bored. Nos gustaba ver las películas de horror. We used to like watching horror movies.

8 I MPERFECT P hysical Description Ellas eran morenas y muy bonitas. They were brunette (dark-haired) and very pretty. Los jugadores eran altos y delgados. The players used to be tall and thin.

9 I MPERFECT L ocation Ellos estaban en la estación del tren. They were at the train station. El libro estaba en mi mochila. The book was in my backpack.

10 I MPERFECT H abitual actions (repeated actions) Cada verano, íbamos a la playa de vacaciones. Each summer we would go to the beach for vacation.

11 I MPERFECT I nterrupted actions *An ongoing imperfect action will be interrupted by a preterite action. Yo leía cuando de repente sonó el teléfono. I was reading when all of a sudden the phone rang.

12 ON GOING ACTION WITH A COMPLETED ACTION The imperfect can be used with the preterit in the following case : Something w ww was going on (imperfect) when something h hh happened (preterit). Yo c cc caminaba (estaba caminando) (imperfecto) cuando empezó a llover(pretérito). I was walking (imperfect) when i ii it began ( (( (preterit) to rain.

13 I MPERFECT S imultaneous Actions ( same-time actions- Mientras ) *Two actions happening at the same time will both be in imperfect. Usually split by “mientras” Él corría mientras ellas caminaban. He was running while they were walking.

14 While one action is going on and another action is going on at the same time, the imperfect is used with both actions While we were walking (imperfect )to the store, our friends w ww were seeing (imperfect) a movie. Mientras, n nn nosotros caminábamos/ estábamos caminando (imperfecto) a la tienda, nuestros amigos v vv veían/estaban viendo (imperfecto) una película.
