2 Review of regular verb endings -o-amos -asáis -a-an -o -emos -eséis -e-en Verbs that end in “ar” Verbs that end in “er” Verbs that end in “ir” -o -imos -esís -e-en Yo llevo la blusa. Tú llevas la blusa. Ella lleva la blusa. Yo bebo la limonada. Tú bebes la limonada. Nosotros bebemos la limonada.

3 What’s the stem/root of a verb? What’s the ending of a verb? The ending is the last 2 letters of the verb. In Spanish, all verbs end in “ar, er, or ir”. The stem/root of a verb contains ALL of the letters except the ending…….or every letter leading up to the ending. Our new verb “costar” = to cost. Stem = cost Ending = ar

4 o  ue stem-changing verbs that end in “ar” In the following verbs, the “o” changes to “ue” in all forms, EXCEPT nosotros & vosotros. “ar” encontrar—to find almorzar——to (eat) lunch *costar——to cost *usually only use él/ella/Ud. & ellos/ellas/Uds. forms of costar ¿Cuánto cuesta la bicicleta?

7 El verbo ZAPATO Every form inside of the shoe stem changes. The “o” changes to “ue”. *Only the nosotros outside of the shoe does not stem change.

10 costar: to cost We use cuesta for something that is singular. Ejemplo: el libro cuesta cinco dólares. We use cuestan for something that is plural. Ejemplo: los libros cuestan diez dólares.

11 jugar: to play (sport) Yo juego I play Nosotros jugamos We play Tú juegas You play El, Ella Usted juega He, she, you formal play Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes juegan They, you all play

12 volver: to return (to a place) Yo vuelvo I return to a place Nosotros volvemos We return to a place Tú vuelves You return to a place El, Ella Usted vuelve He, she, you formal returns to a place Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes vuelven They, you all return to a place

13 devolver: to return (a thing) Yo devuelvo I return Nosotros DE volvemos We return Tú devuelves You return El, Ella Usted devuelve He, she, you formal returns Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes devuelven They, you all return

14 poder: to be able to/can Yo puedo I am able to/can Nosotros podemos We are able to/can Tú puedes You are able to/can El, Ella Usted puede He, she, you formal is/are able to/can Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes pueden They, you all able to/can

15 Add this to your “”poder” notes: We normally use a form of “poder” (puedo, puedes, puede, etc.) + the infinitive of the verb. Ejemplo: ¿Tú puedes montar en bicicleta? = Can you ride a bike? Or are you able to ride a bike? Montar = to ride …get it?
