9 Stem-Changing Verbs 143 Verbs with vowel variations in their stems are called stem-changing verbs. The stem of the verb is what is left when you drop the -ar, -er, or -ir. The second-to-last vowel of these verbs changes when it is conjugated. Stem-changers we already know: querer & jugar, almorzar, volver, llover, dormir, empezar, merendar, entender In these verbs, the vowel changes the following way: o  ue e  ie IMPORTANT: Stem-changes happen in all forms except the & form. After you change the stem, you use regular endings when conjugating each form. 20

10 143 Stem-Changing Verbs In this chapter we will add 5 new verbs to our list of stem changers. First, we’ll start with the new verbs that are similar to the ones we already know: preferir, poder, and probar. Based on what you know about stem-changers, fill in the verb charts below. 20 145 Present progressive To say what is happening right now, use the present progressive, combine a present tense form of estar with the present participle. Form the present participle by replacing -ar with -ando and -er/-ir with -iendo. Cantar → cantando Rosa está cantando. Rosa is singing. Comer → comiendo Estamos comiendo. We are eating.

21 145 Vowel Stems When the stem of an -er/-ir verb ends in a vowel, form the present participle by changing the i of -iendo to -y (-yendo). Leer → leyendo ¿Estás leyendo? Are you reading?

145 Stem-changing -IR Verbs The participle of stem-changing -ir verbs like pedir, dormir, and servir change o→u and e→i. There are no stem changes for -ar and -er verbs. Dormir → durmiendo Servir → sirviendo

23 145 Ir and Venir The verbs ir and venir are not usually used in the present progressive. Use the simple present tense instead. Are you coming to the party? ¿Vienes a la fiesta? No, I’m going to the library. No, voy a la biblioteca.
