2 W HAT DOES “ CONJUGATING ” A VERB MEAN ? We conjugate in English EVERYDAY! Conjugating is modifying a verb to match its subject Verbs are When we are conjugating, we are changing from the infinitive form to demonstrate the subject d oing the verb. The infinitive form is the verb, before you modify it. In English, it is the form that starts with “to”: like t o arrive, to go, to talk, to l earn. Conjugating it would be: I arrive, you go, the teacher talks, she learns (the purple is the subject)

3 V ERBS IN SPANISH All infinitive forms of verbs in Spanish have one of the following endings (it is equivalent to the “to” before infinitives in English verbs): -ar -er -ir

4 S O, WHAT ’ S AN – AR VERB ? An –ar verb is one that ends in…

5 S O, WHAT ’ S CONJUGATING IN S PANISH ? When you conjugate in Spanish: 1 st : you drop the ending (that is the – ar, - er, or – ir e nding) 2 nd : add the new ending, based on the endings for that type of verb and the subject/subject pronoun

6 S UBJECTS AND S UBJECT P RONOUNS A subject can be a single word (noun, pronoun, noun phrase, or Proper noun). A subject tells who or what performs the verb! A subject pronoun take the place of a person/thing Examples of s ubject pronouns in context: My mother cooks (mother is the subject; cooks is the verb); She cooks (she is the subject pronoun that replaces mother ) Señor Ramirez is my teacher ( Señor Ramirez is the subject; i s is the verb) H e is my teacher ( he is the subject pronoun that replaces S eñor Ramirez )

7 S UBJECT PRONOUNS IN S PANISH Yo- I 1 st person singular Tú- You 2 nd person singular Él- He 3 rd person singular Ella- She 3 rd person singular Usted- You 2 nd person singular (used when talking to someone who is not your peer- formal) Nosotros- We 1 st person singular Vosotros- You all 2 nd person plural – only used in Spain Ellos- They 3 rd person plural masculine/ mix of masculine & feminine Ellas- They -3 rd person plural feminine Ustedes- You all 2 nd person plural (used when talking to someone who is not your peer- formal) SingularPlural
