1 The Speech Detective’s Clue Chronicle January Issue – Parent Edition New Happenings Happy New Year!! We hope you had a restful and exciting winter break staying warm with your loved ones. We also had a family-filled holiday break. Now, we are back and our students have returned to school with their energy high and ready to tackle the rest of the school year. In our therapy sessions, we are working on many speech and language skills such as sequencing, describing, and practicing strategies to read some complicated words. During this cold winter month, we have suggested some activities that target speech and language skills as well as keep you warm. Enjoy!! Speech & Language To Go Making Hot Chocolate: Following Directions, Answering Questions, and Vocabulary Create a recipe for your child to follow to make hot chocolate. Write the steps out on a piece of paper and make simple drawings of each step. Ask your child questions about the recipe so you know they understand what they are seeing/hearing. Then, let your child try the recipe. While you are doing it, make sure you’re labeling the actions and objects involved. Planning for the Coming Year: This is a great activity to do with your child because not only will your child be working on formulating future tense sentences, but you will also get to hear about his/her hopes and dreams for the coming year. Sit down with your child and tell him/her you are going to write some New Year’s Resolutions. You can start by making a list of your own New Year’s Resolutions. This will give your child an example of what is expected and will help your child get comfortable with sharing this information with you. Make sure that all of your resolutions use future tense verbs and correct grammar. For example, your list might say “I will go to the gym three times per week” instead of “go to gym more”. This will help your child gain a better grasp on the future tense. If your child is struggling with coming up with ideas, try asking your child what things he likes to do. Then say, “Do you want to do that again this year?” If he says yes, go ahead and formulate the sentence for him and write it down. It’s good to write these down for your child even if he can’t read yet so he gets exposure to writing and text. We know that time is very limited and that meeting with teachers to discuss student progress can be difficult to schedule. 3 La Crónica de Pistas Detectives en El Habla Edición de Enero – Para Padres Los Nuevos Acontecimientos ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Esperamos que hayan tenido unas vacaciones de invierno tranquilos y emocionante manteniéndose calientitos con sus seres queridos. También nosotros tuvimos unas vacaciones llenas de tiempo con la familia y mucha comida rica. Ahora, estamos de vuelta y nuestros estudiantes han regresado a la escuela con su energía alta y listo para afrontar el resto del año escolar. En nuestras sesiones de terapia, estamos trabajando en muchas habilidades del habla y del lenguaje como la secuenciación, describir, y practicar estrategias para leer algunas palabras complicadas. Durante este mes de invierno frío, hemos sugerido algunas actividades que se dirigen a las habilidades del habla y del lenguaje y así como mantenernos calientitos. ¡Disfrute! La Terapia del Habla y Lenguaje en La Casa Hacer Chocolate Caliente: Objetos - Respondiendo preguntas y Vocabulario Crear una receta para su hijo/a seguir para hacer chocolate caliente. Escribe los pasos en un pedazo de papel y hacer dibujos sencillos de cada paso. Pregunte a su hijo/a sobre la receta para que sepas que entienden lo que están viendo/escuchando. Luego, deje que su hijo/a haga la receta. Mientras que usted está haciéndolo, asegúrese de que estás etiquetando las acciones y objetos involucrados.
