2 W HAT IS A DIRECT OBJECT ? A direct object directly receives the action of a verb. It answers the question what or whom in relation to that verb. Mariano drinks coffee. (direct object noun) What does he drink? Juanita helped him. (direct object pronoun) Whom did Juanita help? coffee him

3 W HAT IS A DIRECT OBJECT PRONOUN ? A direct object pronoun replaces a direct object noun. Some of the Spanish direct object pronouns should look familiar. Me me Te you (tú) Lo him, it, you (Ud.) [m.s] La her, it, you (Ud.) [f.s] Nos us Os you (vosotros) Los them, you (Uds.) [m.pl] Las them, you (Uds.) [f.pl]

4 U NOS E JEMPLOS ¿Me entiendes? Do you understand me? Sí, te entiendo perfectamente. Yes, I understand you perfectly. ¿Conoce Ud. a Señora Carpinella? Sí, la conozco. ¿Dónde compran Uds. las carpetas? Las compramos en la papelería. Notice that object pronouns in Spanish go immediately BEFORE conjugated verbs. 8 U NA COSA MÁS … Notice that object pronouns can also be attached to the end of infinitives or present participles. Ejemplo: I am going to invite them. Yo los voy a invitar OR Yo voy a invitarlos. Ejemplo: I am writing it. Yo la estoy escribiendo. OR Yo estoy escribiéndola.

12 L AS R EGLAS 1. Direct object pronouns must agree in number and in gender with the noun they replace 2. Direct object pronouns come directly before the conjugated verb or attached to the end of an infinitive or present participle (gerund).
