2 Direct object pronouns allow us to avoid repetition of nouns!

3 A direct object receives the action of a verb and serves to answer the question What? or Whom? in relation to that verb Mariano drinks coffee. (direct object noun) What does he drink? Juanita helped him. (direct object pronoun) Whom did Juanita help?

4 A direct object pronoun replaces a direct object noun. Some of the Spanish direct object pronouns should look familiar: Me me Te you (tú) Lo him, it, you (Ud.) La her, it, you (Ud.) Nos us Los them, you (Uds.) Las them, you (Uds.)

5 How to form the DOP Sentence: I hear you 1. Who or what is doing the action?  I (Yo) 2. Who or what is receiving the action?  You (Te) 3. What is the action?  Hear (escucho) Yo te escucho

6 How to form the DOP Sentence: She sees you 1. Who or what is doing the action?  She (Ella) 2. Who or what is receiving the action?  You (Te) 3. What is the action?  Sees (ve) Ella te ve

7 How to form the DOP Sentence: They read the book 1. Who or what is doing the action?  They (Ellos) 2. Who or what is receiving the action?  The book (lo) 3. What is the action?  Read(Leen) Ellos lo leen

8 How to form the DOP Sentence: We take the backpacks 1. Who or what is doing the action?  We (Nosotros) 2. Who or what is receiving the action?  The backpacks (las) 3. What is the action?  Take (tomamos) Nosotros las tomamos

9 Affirmative Sentences In an affirmative sentence w/ one verb, the DOP goes in front of the conjugated verb. Ej: –Yo te conozco –Ella lo sabe –Nosotros la conocemos

10 Negative Sentences In a negative sentence w/ one verb, the DOP is placed between the negative word (no, nadie, etc.) and the conjugated verb. Ej: –Yo no lo sé –Nunca lo estudias –Nadie la quiere

11 Affirmative Sentences In an affirmative sentence w/ 2 verbs- the 1 st verb is conjugated and the 2 nd is in the infinitive- you have 2 options: 1. Place the DOP in front of the conjugated verb 2. Attach the DOP to the infinitive/ A)Lo puedo comprar B)Puedo comprarlo

12 Questions/ Negative Sentences In a question and/ or negative sentences w/ 2 verbs, the DOP can be placed before the conjugated verb or attached directly to the infinitive. Ej: –No tengo que leerlo/ No lo tengo que leer –¿Tienes que estudaiarlo?/ ¿Lo tienes que estudiar?
