2 SMSD Policy SMSD Board Policy on Bullying Intimidation or Bullying (Policy JBAA): The board is committed to a safe and civil educational environment for all students free from intimidation or bullying. Bullying is prohibited on school property, in any vehicle used to transport students for district purposes or at a school-sponsored activity or event. “Intimidation or bullying” means any intentional written, verbal, or physical act, when the intentional written, verbal or physical act: Harms a student or damages the student’s property, Has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s education. Is severe, persistent or pervasive so that it creates an intimidating or threatening educational environment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Intimidación o acoso (JBAA Política): La Junta se ha comprometido a tener un entorno educativo seguro y civiles para todos los estudiantes, libre de intimidación o acoso. La intimidación está prohibida en la propiedad escolar, en cualquier vehículo usado para el transporte de estudiantes con fines de una actividad patrocinada por la escuela o evento en el distrito escolar. "La intimidación o acoso escolar" se entiende todo acto intencional ya sea escrito, verbal o físico. 4 Reporting Bullying O New form is available at 4 locations throughout the building 1. Front Hall 2. Library Hallway 3. By Room 160 4. Downstairs by display O Students may put forms in metal box by front office (anonymously). Box will be emptied daily.

5 Investigating Bullying Administrators and the School Resource Officer will investigate all reports of bullying to determine whether or not the claim is legitimate and the behavior rises to the level of “bullying” according to the SMSD policy definition.

6 Consequences for Bullying Student Will: Student May: O Be suspended. (OSS or ISS depending on severity and frequency.) O Given packet to complete which includes: Reading material and quizzes Contract Information regarding “Redirections” O Meet w/Admin upon return to discuss packet. O Be placed on Hallway Restriction. O Be restricted from riding bus for a period of time. Repeat Offenders: O See previous. O Enrolled in “Redirections.”

7 Redirections O Taught by counselor(s) and peer mediators. O Meet weekly Students will be responsible for classwork missed. O Lessons re: conflict resolution, empathy building, recognizing bullying behaviors, etc. O Counselor(s) and Administration will determine when student has met objectives of the course.

8 Help For Victims/Targets  Counselors will work with students in an individual or group setting to teach practical strategies for dealing with the bully and conflict resolution skills.  Administration will communicate with the student’s parents and provide follow-up to monitor the situation.
