1 Marcos 9: 30 En aquel tiempo, Jesús y sus discípulos atravesaban Galilea, pero él no quería que nadie lo supiera, porque iba enseñando a sus discípulos. 31 Les decía: “El Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los hombres; le darán muerte, y tres días después de muerto, resucitará”.

2 32 Pero ellos no entendían aquellas palabras y tenían miedo de pedir explicaciones.
33 Llegaron a Cafarnaúm, y una vez en casa, les preguntó: “¿De qué discutían por el camino?” 34 Pero ellos se quedaron callados, porque en el camino habían discutido sobre quién de ellos era el más importante.

3 35 Entonces Jesús se sentó, llamó a los Doce y les dijo: “Si alguno quiere ser el primero, que sea el último de todos y el servidor de todos”. 36 Después, tomando a un niño, lo puso en medio de ellos, lo abrazó y les dijo: 37 “El que reciba en mi nombre a uno de estos niños, a mí me recibe. Y el que me reciba a mí, no me recibe a mí, sino a aquel que me ha enviado”.

6 Mark 9: 30 Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee, but he did not wish anyone to know about it. 31 He was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death he will rise.”

7 32 But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him.
33 They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” 34 But they remained silent. They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest.

8 35 Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” 36 Taking a child he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it he said to them, 37 “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the one who sent me.”

11 Reflections on Mark : Reflexiones en Marcos 9: by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J Sept. 23, 2012 Today is the 25th Sunday of Ordinary Time. Once again, Jesus predicts his passion. This is the second time. The first was in Mark 8:31. The third was in Mark 10:33. He makes it very clear that he is going to be a suffering Messiah. The Apostles did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him. Other pressing things were on their minds. This time they were arguing about who was the greatest!

Hoy es el 25º domingo de Tiempo Ordinario. Una vez mas Jesús predice su Pasión. Esta es la segunda vez. La primera vez fue en Marcos 8:31. La tercera vez fue en Marcos 10:33. Jesús lo hace muy claro que Él va a ser un Mesías sufriendo. Los Apóstoles no entendieron este dicho, y tuvieron miedo preguntarle. Tenían otras cosas más importante para ellos en sus mentes. Ésta vez estaban averiguando quien entre ellos era él mayor.

13 The first time, interestingly enough, Peter rebuked the Lord, and had to be corrected (Mark 8:33). The third time, James and John were still anxious to be at the right and left hand of Jesus in his glory (Mark 10:37). Therefore, it seems that they just didn’t get it. In the gospel today, Jesus says that if you want to be first, you must be the last of all, and the servant of all. In the third time (Mark 10:44-45), Jesus said “whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

15 It took the first community of believers a long time to learn this very necessary teaching. If we are to follow Jesus, we must pick up our own cross, and follow in his footsteps. It is important to have the mind of Christ as we do this.

17 St Paul in Philippians 2:5-8 says: “Have this mind in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, existing in the form of God, counted not the being on an equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men; and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, becoming obedient even unto death, yea, the death of the cross.”

18 San Pablo en Filipenses 2:5-8 dice: “Haya, pues, en vosotros este sentir que hubo también en Cristo Jesús, el cual, siendo en forma de Dios no estima el ser igual a Dios como cosa a que aferrarse, sino que se despojo a sí mismo, tomando forma de siervo, hecho semejante a los hombres, y estando en la condición de hombre, se humillo a si mismo, haciéndose obediente hasta la muerte, y muerte de cruz.”

19 In Colossians 1:24 Paul says: “I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions, for the sake of his body the Church.” And in 2 Corinthians 1:5 he says: ‘As we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.”

20 En Colosenses 1:24 Pablo dice: “Me gozo en lo que padezco por ustedes, y en mi carne completo lo que falta en las aflicciones de Cristo, por su cuerpo, que es la iglesia.” Y en 2 Corintios 1:5 dice: “Al compartir abundantemente en los sufrimientos de Cristo, así por medio de Cristo compartimos abundantemente de su consuelo también.”

21 In 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 St. Paul says: “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh.”

23 The early Christian martyrs went to their deaths singing, as they were burned at the stake or were thrown to the lions. They made the sign of the cross many times, so that all would know why they were doing this. They rejoiced at having been chosen to suffer for Jesus. St Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4: “So we do not lose heart, this slight momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, because we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

24 Los primeros mártires Cristianos llegaron a sus muertes cantando, al ser quemados en los postes o al ser aventados a los leones. Hacían la señal de la cruz para que todo mundo supiera porque estaban haciendo esto. Regocijaban al ser escogidos para sufrir por Cristo Jesús. San Pablo en 2 Corintios 4: dice: “Por eso no nos desanimamos. Pues aunque por fuera nos vamos deteriorando, por dentro nos renovamos día a día.  Lo que sufrimos en esta vida es cosa ligera, que pronto pasa; pero nos trae como resultado una gloria eterna mucho más grande y abundante. Porque no nos fijamos en lo que se ve, sino en lo que no se ve, ya que las cosas que se ven son pasajeras, pero las que no se ven son eternas.”

25 The next time you find yourself “mourning and weeping in this vale of tears”, remember these passages. I hope it will help you as much as it has helped me. When the moment of suffering comes, I don’t have to bellyache and complain. Nor do I go into a tailspin of self-pity, sadness, and depression. I don’t have to go get drunk or look for a high on forbidden drugs or other addictions. Christ has set me free, and with his GRACE, I can be victorious.

26 La siguiente vez que te encuentres llorando y sufriendo en este valle de lagrimas, recuerda estos pasajes. Espero que te ayuden tanto, como me han ayudado a mí. Cuando venga el momento de sufrir, no tenemos que pasar por él a gritos y sombrerazos, renegando. Ni tampoco tengo que cantar la canción “Pobre de mí.” No hay que estar tristes, colgadotes, ni deprimidos. No tengo que buscar el escape en la borrachera o en otras adicciones o en las drogas. Cristo me ha liberado, y con su GRACIA, puedo ser victorioso.

29 We preach Christ crucified and maltreated
We preach Christ crucified and maltreated. Christ wants us to be one with him (John 17:23). When we think and pray about it, God will make us strong. That is the power of his divine grace. If you begin to look at life with the mind of Christ, you can begin to understand more deeply when St. Paul says: “wage the good warfare, armed with faith” (1 Timothy 1:18). Perhaps unexpectedly, you will find a new mysterious strength sufficient to overcome when the going gets tough. You will say, “I shall not be moved!”

Hablamos de Jesús crucificado y maltratado. Cristo quiere que seamos uno con Él (Juan 17:23). Al pensarla, Dios nos va a hacer fuertes. Eso es el poder de su gracia divina. Comienza uno a pensar como Cristo. Entonces entiende uno mas a profundas cuando San Pablo nos dice: “Presta servicio en este noble combate, armado de fe (1 Timoteo 1:18).” Quizá inesperadamente encuentres una fuerza misteriosa bastante para superar cuando duros son los tiempos. Mejor dirás: “¡Nada me moverá!”

What an honor and a privilege to be called to partake of his suffering! With St. Paul (1 Timothy 1:17) I can say: “To the king of ages,* incorruptible, invisible, the only God, honor and glory forever and ever. Amen! ”

32 ¡Que honor y que gran privilegio eso de ser llamados a tomar parte de los sufrimientos de Cristo! Con San Pablo (1 Timoteo 1:17) puedo yo decir: “Al Rey de los siglos, al inmortal, invisible y único Dios, honor y gloria por los siglos de los siglos. ¡Amen!”
