2 Imperfect of regular verbs

3 Imperfect of regular verbs
The imperfect is used to talk about the past, but it has different uses than the preterite. The imperfect tells what someone used to do, what things were like, or how things used to be.

4 Imperfect of regular verbs
Form the imperfect by removing the -ar, -er, or -ir infinitive ending and adding the imperfect endings below. *Note that the yo and usted/él/ella forms are the same. 5 Imperfect of regular verbs
As a child, I lived in a neighborhood on the outskirts of town. De niño, vivía en un barrio en las afueras del pueblo. I played (would play) with my neighbors… We’d climb trees. Jugaba con mis vecinos en el campo. Nos trepábamos a los árboles. I knew a lot about… I wanted to see the Amazon (river). Sabía mucho de las plantas y los animlaes. Quería conocer el Amazonas.

6 Imperfect of regular verbs
The imperfect forms of the verb soler with an infinitive are used to say someone usually did something or tended to do something. We usually spent the summer with my grandparents. Solíamos pasar el verano con mis abuelos.

7 Imperfect of regular verbs
The imperfect is often used with expressions such as muchas veces, a veces, (casi) siempre, and todos los años.

14 Imperfect of ser Use the verb ser in the imperfect to describe what someone or something was generally like in the past. Its forms are irregular. I was a mischievous child, but my parents were very patient. Yo era un niño travieso pero mis padres eran muy pacientes. Imperfect of ser yo era éramos tú eras erais usted/él/ella eran

15 Imperfect of haber You’ve used hay, the present tense form of haber, to say what there is or are. Use the imperfect form había to say what there generally was/were or what there used to be in the past. There were always a lot of people at home.  Siempre había mucha gente en casa. There were three cats at my grandmother’s house. Había tres gatos en la casa de mi abuela.

18 More uses of the imperfect
When talking about the past, use imperfect to set the scene. If two things are going on at the same time, use the conjunction mientras (while) to join them. Era viernes por la noche. En El Mesón, el pianista tocaba mientras los clientes conversaban y comían tranquilamente.

19 More uses of the imperfect
The imperfect is often used after the preterite of decir with que to report what someone said. A la sopa le falta ajo. El cocinero dijo que a la sopa le faltaba ajo. What the cook says. Someone is reporting what the cook said. What the cook said.

21 The imperfect To talk about situations in the past, use the imperfect to set the scene and tell the circumstances surrounding an event. Eran las ocho de la noche y tenía mucha prisa. Mis amigos me esperaban en el cine Alameda. Íbamos a ver una película porque hacía mal tiempo.

22 The Imperfect Use the imperfect to talk about what people were generally like, how they used to feel, and what they used to like or dislike. De niña, no me gustaban los vegetales pero tenía que comerlos todos los días.

23 The imperfect To contrast past routines or situations with the present, use the imperfect to say how things used to be and the present tense to say how things are now. De niña, no me gustaban los vegetales. Ahora, me encantan.
