En 1773, los colonos arrojaron té británico en el puerto de Boston para protestar un impuesto de importación sobre el té. Rey Jorge III, ordenó al Navy británico a cerrar el puerto como resultado

Como respuesta a las protestas de los colonos 4,000 soldados británicos llegaron a Boston a restaurar el orden. El contacto diario entre colono y soldado sólo hizo empeorar la situación. El 5 de marzo del 1770, 60 personas rodearon a los soldados británicos. Los colonos empezaron a lanzar bolas de nieve. De repente, se sonó un disparo, luego seguido por otros. 11 colonos se lastimaron, cinco murieron
