Accents and Punctuation Gramática

Accents Lets begin… In Spanish, an accent mark is sometimes needed over a vowel (á, é, í, ó, ú), usually to show which syllable is stressed. ejemplo: teléfono- telephone

Why are accents important? 1.Accents change the PRONUNCIATION of words, depending on which vowel the mark falls. 2.Accents can cause words to take on a different MEANING. 3.QUESTION WORDS have accents.

Ejemplos Change in pronunciation: -television vs. televisión -futbol vs. fútbol Change in meaning: - el vs. él (the) vs. (he) -ésta vs. está (this ) vs. (is)

Question Words To ask questions, put the question words at the beginning of a sentence. Notice that question words have accents: ¿Cómo estás? How are you? ¿Cómo te llamas? Whats your name? ¿Cuántos años tienes? How old are you? ¿De dónde eres? Where are you from? ¿Qué te gusta? What do you like? ¿Cuándo practicas? When do you practice? * Notice that ¿cómo? can mean how? and what? depending on the context.

The Ñ Mark The mark on the ñ (as in español) is called the tilde. The tilde indicates the sound ny as in canyon. ejemplo: España

Lets practice! Looking at your vocabulary on page 45, can you tell which of the following words are missing accent marks and/or tildes? Where do the marks belong? 1.Este es mi amigo… 2.¿Y tu? 3.Senorita 4.¿Que tal? 5.Adios 6.el numero 7.Mas o menos 8.¿De donde eres?

Punctuation Lets begin… Have you noticed that Spanish uses upside-down punctuation marks to begin a question (¿) and an exclamation (¡)? ejemplos: ¿Te gusta el español? Do you like Spanis? ¡Qué bien! Thats great!

Lets practice! Add the correct punctuation mark for each sentence. 1.Me llamo Diana. Y tú? 2.Mucho gusto! 3.Cuántos años tienes, Marta? 4.Y tú? Cómo estás? 5.Hola! 6.Oye! Eres Mercedes? Gracias!
