NOT YOUR RELATIVES PRONOUNS… Relative Pronouns
QUE THAT WHICH WHO WHOM
¡Mi programa favorito!
English Spanish I bought the shoes she wanted. We brought the car you asked for. Gabriela followed the road you told her to follow. Compré los zapatos que ella quería. Trajimos el auto que pediste. Gabriela siguió el camino que usted le dijo que siga. Of COURSE there is a difference!
Make sure that you use THAT in your Spanish! María returned the book (that) she borrowed. María returned the book que prestó.
Que used with prepositions: A que - to which Con que – with which De que – of which, about which En que – in which, at which NO DANGLING PREPOSITIONS IN SPANISH!!!!
Informal Formal The person I went with was late. The restaurant we went to was busy. The topic we talked about was boring. The person with whom I went was late. The restaurant to which we went was busy. The topic about which we talked was boring. English Structure:
Informal Spanish DOESNT EXIST! Spanish for real! La persona fui con estaba atrasada. La persona con quien fui estaba atrasada. It is IMPOSSIBLE to form sentences like our informal English!!!!
Formal English Spanish To whom am I speaking? With whom are you going? To where are you going? ¿Con quién hablo? ¿Con quién vas? ¿A dónde vas? Heres the way to do it!
English Spanish The lake at which you swam is polluted. The tree about which we are talking is very old. The beach to which we went Saturday is far away. El lago en que nadaron ustedes está contaminado. El árbol de que estamos hablando es muy viejo. La playa a que fuimos el sábado está muy lejos. NEVER END A SENTENCE WITH A PREPOSITION IN SPANISH!
QUIEN QUIEN IS USED TO REFER TO PEOPLE. IT CAN MEAN WHO, WHOM OR THAT AND IS OFTEN USED WITH THE PREPOSITIONS A, CON AND DE. Who and Whom
A QUIEN/QUIENES – WHO, WHOM, TO WHOM CON QUIEN/QUIENES- WITH WHOM DE QUIEN/QUIENES – ABOUT WHOM, THAT Quien reflects the quantity of the subject to which it refers!
Por Ejemplo: Juan, to whom I gave the shoes, is very happy. The people with whom we went out last night have not returned. The teacher whom we asked about the pollution didnt know anything. We were surprised when Carmen, about whom wed been talking, arrived.
