The in English is a definite article
The in English is a definite article. In Spanish, the definite article is either el or la. You use el with the masculine nouns and la with the feminine nouns. They must agree with the noun they modify. el muchacho la muchacha el amigo la amiga el curso la escuela

Note that in the plural form (more than one) el becomes los and la becomes las.
el amigo los amigos el muchacho los muchachos el curso los cursos la amiga las amigas la muchacha las muchachas la clase las clases

A, an, and some are called indefinite articles. In Spanish, the definite article is either un, una, unos or unas. Again, they must agree with the noun they modify, both in masculine and feminine and singular and plural. un muchacho una muchacha un amigo una amigo un curso una escuela
