2 The Preterite Tense of Regular Verbs
-er and –ir endings are the same. 1st and 3rd person singular take accents. Nosotros forms of –ar and –ir are the same as present tense. -ar and –er verbs that have stem changes in the present DO NOT have stem changes in the preterite. Preterite –ar verb endings -é -amos -aste -ó -aron Hablé con mi padre ayer. Preterite –er -ir verb endings -í -imos -iste -ío -ieron Ella escribío la carta ya.

3 Verbs with spelling changes
Creer (to believe), leer, and oír (to hear) have spelling changes. Verbs that end in car,-gar, and –zar have spelling changes in the yo form buscar→ busqué llegar → llegué empezar → empecé creí creímos creíste creyó creyeron leí leímos leíste leyó leyeron oí oímos oíste oyó oyeron

8 How will I know if someone is saying “went” or “was”?
Answer: CONTEXT! Consider: Yo fui a la escuela a las ocho. La escuela fue divertida. Nosotros fuimos al correo. El correo fue ocupado.

9 Write three sentences:
Summarize your weekend. Tell me what your weekend was like (describe it!). Tell me one place you went over the weekend. Tell me what that place was like (describe it!).

10 Preterite of stem-changing verbs
-ir verbs that have a stem change in the present, also have changes in the preterite- but only in the 3rd person .We call these “slipper verbs” Why? e → i Infinitive Verb Stem Stem Change Preterite servir → ser sir sirvio, sirvieron pedir → ped pid pidio,pidieron o → u Infinitive Verb Stem Stem Change Preterite morir → mor mur murio, murieron dormir → dorm durm durmio,durmieron

How will you ever remember them? Well, you will practice, memorize and practice some more! Interestingly enough irregular verbs (in any language) are usually those that we use all the time (frequently)!
